NARA’s official history: he retired as Archivist on April 30, 2022. On April 29, 2022, National Archives News published “Archivist of the United States David S. Ferriero Reflects on His Tenure Upon Retirement.” It said he had led the agency 12 years, confirmed in late 2009, and that April 30 was his last day. Deputy Archivist Debra Steidel Wall became acting Archivist.

The Washington Times, May 3, 2022, reported a C-SPAN interview with Susan Swain. Ferriero: “It’s time for someone new.” Asked about hoping his successor would not be, as all previous archivists had been, a white male, he said it pointed to “a lack of attention to diversity in appointments,” and: “Since 1934, you can’t tell me that there wasn’t a qualified minority or woman to fill this position.” Those are Times-quoted C-SPAN remarks. They are not a personnel crime. They are his public advice on the next appointment.

Fox News later noted he was an Obama-era holdover through the Trump presidency. That staffing fact is documented by the dates. The word “holdover” is a description, not a statute.
